Understanding Air Compressor Jargon

Rotary Screw Air CompressorsLike many forms of technology, air compressors tend to come with their own unique terms and acronyms, or ‘jargon’. In addition, there are different types of air compressors, each with their own category based on what functions they perform along with the processes involved. Here are some of the important terms and phrases when it comes to air compressors:

  • Duty Cycle- the amount of cooldown time a unit needs after performing in a schedule operating time
  • Capacity- air flow amount, often written as cubic feet
  • Intercooling- process of cooling gas in order to drop the temperature, reduce gas volume and turn vapors into liquids
  • Demand- air flow requiprements
  • CFM- Cubic Feet per Minute
  • SCFM- Standard Cubic Feet per Minute
  • Desiccant- A moisture absorber used in the process of adsorption, or removing moisture from compressed air

It could also be noted there are different types of air compressors. Dynamic type compressors utilize rotating impellers to create pressure and velocity in the air. Rotating compressors, also known as positive displacement compressors, take air into a confined space. Reciprocating air compressors use pistons in order to compress air. Regardless of your air compressor type, make liberal use of the manuals that come with these units in order to use the equipment to its best intended use.
